On Screen Controls

The VoicePro recording engineer's window is very simple, as shown above. Essentially there are controls for RECORD, STOP, PAUSE, plus a button to DELete the current recording. You can use the DEL key DURING recording, to ABORT the recording, as if it had never happened. Alternatively you can use it AFTER recording to delete the last recording made.

To the right of the transport buttons is the FILENAME field, where the script will load the current filename for recording. You can also override the filename here, or manually enter names when not operating with a script.

Underneath the filename field, the 'Link to File' button lets you load a new script file. The 'Record Path' button sets where to store subsequently recorded files. The left and right arrows allow you to navigate to the next and previous lines in your script.

Beneath this, there are pop up menus to select the SampleRate, Channels, and resolution to be recorded. These pop ups reflect the options offered by the current default audio recording device. Some devices offer a choice of sample rates, whilst others may offer only one.

NOTE: In OS9, it is usually possible to select '1 or 2' from the Channels pop up, in order to specify mono or stereo recording. However, due to the architecture of OSX, it may not be possible to set channels to '1'. This is a factor of the OSX sound system.

If you experience problems with sound input, metering etc, please contact the manufacturer of your sound hardware, not Gallery. VoicePro relies heavily on the information provided, and default behaviour of Sound Input devices.

After selecting a script, or pressing the 'Scripted' button, the window expands to show the prompt section of the recording window, and the prompt window.

In many cases, it is useful to position the prompt window on a second monitor in your voiceover booth for your talent. Video cards like the ATI Radeon 9000 offer dual monitor output, and some models such as the Radeon 8500 offer one VGA type output, and one PAL/NTSC type output to feed a video monitor in your VO booth.

On the prompt window you will see a 'recording' light, and a peak light. These allow the talent to see when you are in record, and also to monitor if the sound is clipping. The on screen text can be customised with preferences to select a different font, or size.

When in scripted mode, the recording engineer's window echoes the dialog text, so that everyone knows what dialog is to be recorded. By automatically providing the filename, and clearly communicating the dialog to be recorded, VoicePro eliminates human error, preventing the wrong dialog ending up in the wrong file, or with filename spelling mistakes. Eliminating these errors are one of the most important benefits of VoicePro, beyond the pure speed of operation.

The Recordings window logs each file you record, showing its name, the text in the file, and the rating you give that file. You can select files to rate them. rename them, delete them, and double click to play, or select a line, then hit the spacebar to play.

Note that the dialog text is also stored as a FINDER COMMENT in the recorded file, so by turning on display of Comments in the finder (OSX or OS9), you can see a similar sort of display in the finder windows.
