Audio Interface Notes
CoreAudio is a very powerful architecture, and as much as possible, Metacorder attempts to shield the user from the details. However, with some sophisticated setups, additional capabilities on offer warrant a more special understanding and setup. In particular, the relationship between mLAN and CoreAudio is more complex.
Yamaha 01x
An ideal partner for Metacorder is the Yamaha 01X digital mixer / mLan interface. Gallery have worked with Yamaha to create an ideal setup of the audio routing for a typical Metacorder 8 channel plus submix recording and monitoring setup. This setup allows the user to record 8 audio inputs to discreet Metacorder channels, prefader, and at the same time create a stereo submix which can be recorded onto another 2 metacorder channels. In addition to this, Metacorder is looping the input audio back to the mixer, so that the user is actually monitoring the 8 channels looped out of Metacorder, allowing the user security to know that the audio is making it all the way through Metacorder. Finally, the stereo mix (which is different to the monitor mix) can be independantly checked using the Monitor A/B button on the 01X.
The general guidelines for setting up this are as follows:
01X - Utility - Patch - 7 - Direct Out PRE FADER
01X - Utility - Patch - 5 - REC BUS - 17/18
mLAN Auto Connector - 01x Properties - Input channels = 16, Enable Monitoring Channels
Metacorder Mixer Mode - Input Loop
Metacorder Tracks 1-8 are the 8 analogs ins to the 01x to record.
Metacorder - Mute tracks 9-16 which are mLAN returns
Metacorder - Tracks 17+18 are the Rec Bus stereo mixdown to record
01X - Mixer Section 1-8 - set all channels to Rec bus ON, Stereo bus OFF
01X - Mixer Section 9-16 - set all channels to Rec bus OFF, Stereo bus ON
01X - Utility - Preference - 5 - Solo Safe Enable Channels 1-8
In Use:
01X - Mixer Section 1-8 are the Mix levels for the Rec Bus Mix
01X - Mixer Section 9-16 are the Monitor levels for 8 channels being looped back from Metacorder
01X - Master Section Fader 1 is the overall level of the Rec Bus feed into Metacorder (mixed on 01X channels 1-8)
When the Monitor A/B button has no LED, you are listening to the Monitor Mix, from channels 9-16, which are the 8 discreet channels being returned from metacorder. These allow you to make a monitor balance, and solo safe individual inputs without affecting the recording. Also, when you playback sound from Metacorder you can adjust the playback monitor levels here, and although you can continue to record inputs, you will be listening to the playback instead, simply by playing the file. When you stop playback, you will hear the input loops again.
When the Monitor A/B button is lit, you are listening to mLAN channels 17 and 18, which are the Rec Bus mix you are recording on inputs 17+18 on Metacorder. Whilst listening to this Mix, you can adjust the recorded mix balance with Faders 1-8 on the 01X, and the master level on fader 1 of the Master section of the mixer, labelled 'BUS'
Once you get your head around what is going where, you will realise that you have incredible control over the levels for recording (using the analog trims), the stereo mix recorded channels, and your discreet monitor mix, and your monitoring of the stereo mixdown to record. You can also use the 01x dynamics and EQ to pre process your recorded signals.
